Honey Banana

Also Known As: Camphor Banana Indian Names: Karpuravalli, Karpooravalli
International Classification: AAB Group
About This Variety
Karpuravalli is considered by many connoisseurs of Indian bananas to be the sweetest variety the country produces. Its name in Tamil- Karpuravalli- translates loosely to "camphor creeper," a reference to its distinctive, almost medicinal aroma that carries a subtle camphor-like note beneath its overwhelmingly sweet character. Internationally, it is best described as the Honey Banana, a name that accurately captures its richly sweet, almost dessert-like flavour.
It is a larger-sized banana, growing between 18 and 22 centimetres, with a thick yellow skin that turns deep golden and develops brown flecks at peak ripeness. Primarily grown in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, it is harvested in the cooler months for the best flavour expression.
Flavour & Texture Profile
Intensely sweet- the sweetest of all Indian export varieties-with a rich, almost honey-like depth of flavour and a distinctive aromatic quality. The flesh is dense, creamy, and rich. At peak ripeness, it carries a warm, complex aroma unlike any other banana. There is virtually no acidity; it is pure, rich sweetness from first bite to finish.

Health Benefits
Rapid Energy Release – Karpuravalli's exceptionally high natural sugar content provides one of the fastest energy releases of any banana variety. It is traditionally consumed by athletes, farmers, and physical labourers immediately before or after intense exertion, functioning as a natural, whole-food energy supplement.
Endurance & Athletic Performance – The combination of fast-acting sugars and potassium makes Karpuravalli ideal for replenishing glycogen stores and preventing muscle cramps during prolonged physical activity. It is a natural, unprocessed alternative to commercial sports nutrition products.
Mood Elevation – The high sugar content triggers a rapid dopamine response, making Karpuravalli a natural mood-lifter. Combined with its Vitamin B6 content, it supports serotonin synthesis for improved emotional wellbeing.
Bone Support – Calcium at 12mg per 100g, higher than most banana varieties, contributes to bone density maintenance, particularly relevant for elderly consumers and growing children.
Traditional Wellness Use – In Tamil Nadu's traditional medicine systems, Karpuravalli is used to soothe respiratory discomfort. Its aromatic compounds, including those responsible for the camphor-like scent, have been studied for mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Ideal For
Premium dessert banana positioning, sports nutrition and energy food brands, specialty Indian food importers, wellness retailers, and natural confectionery applications.
Shelf Life: 7–12 days post-harvest at ambient temperature. The thick skin provides moderate protection during transit, but rapid sugar development accelerates ripening. Cold chain storage at 14°C is recommended for international export.
