About This Variety

Ney Poovan is among the most delicate, sweet, and diminutive of all Indian banana varieties-a true jewel of the Indian banana family. Known internationally as the Lady Finger Banana or Baby Banana, it is a miniature variety that grows to just 10 to 12 centimetres, with a thin, pale yellow skin and an almost impossibly sweet, intensely flavoured flesh.

The name "Ney Poovan" translates from Tamil as "ghee banana"-a reference to the smooth, almost buttery richness of its flesh. In Karnataka, it is known as Elakki Bale, literally meaning "Cardamom Banana," because its scent carries a warm, spiced aromatic quality reminiscent of green cardamom. It is grown primarily in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.

In international specialty markets, particularly in premium grocery channels across Europe, Japan, and the United States, small, intensely sweet banana varieties command significant price premiums over standard Cavendish. Ney Poovan is one of the best-positioned Indian varieties to meet this demand.

Flavour & Texture Profile

Intensely, almost overwhelmingly sweet-significantly sweeter than Grand Naine despite its smaller size. The flavour carries a warm, spiced undertone with a faint cardamom-like aromatic quality. The flesh is pale cream to white, extremely smooth and soft, with almost no fibre. At peak ripeness, it virtually melts on the palate. The aroma is warm, rich, and distinctly fragrant. The skin is very thin, which means it requires careful handling during export but also signals purity of flavour.
